Introduction to SMEDA

SMEDA is a premier institution of the Government of Pakistan under Ministry of Industries & Production. SMEDA was established in October 1998 to take on the challenge of developing Small & Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Pakistan. With a futuristic approach and professional management structure it has focus on providing an enabling environment and business development services to small and medium enterprises. SMEDA is not only an SME policy-advisory body for the Government of Pakistan but also facilitates other stakeholders in addressing their SME development agendas.

Introduction to Energy Desk

Energy Desk is a ONE STOP facility for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Pakistan, established by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) under the Global Environment Facility (GEF) funding, in partnership with Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA). It serves as a knowledge data center to promote the Energy Efficiency (EE) and Renewable Energy (RE) technologies and systems. It aims to provide EE and RE solutions to SMEs and to enhance their capacities through an online Data management System / Portal for providing seamless access to information including technical guidelines, manuals, links to Energy Experts and technology suppliers, and update on training programs and events etc.
The Energy Desk, an initiative by UNIDO taken under its project titled “Sustainable Energy Initiative for Industries in Pakistan” has been established at and in partnership with SMEDA. The project is working closely with the Government of Pakistan to promote inclusive and sustainable industrial development in line with its key thematic areas, one being energy & environment.

United Nations - Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

United Nations General Assembly adopted agenda for Sustainable Development has set the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). SMEDA-UNIDO Energy Desk objectives & activities address 5 of these SDGs , details of which are give below:

Energy desk has the objective to facilitate the promotion of Energy Efficiency and Renewable energy technologies, measures and investments in small and medium enterprises.

Energy Desk has a special focus to facilitate and promote maximum participation of Women Energy Professional, entrepreneurs and businesses in all activities including trainings / seminars and workshops being performed by Energy Desk.

Through this initiative, efforts are to be made to make the small and medium enterprises more competitive and cost effective by utilizing the energy efficiently thus pushing forward the economic growth. Moreover, Energy Desk will provide the platform for SMEs to get in contact with Energy and Renewable Experts and avail their services, resulting in business development of service providers

Sustainable industrialization is not possible without the sustainable energy sources, therefore, Energy Desk has a prime focus on promotion of renewable energy technologies particularly among small and medium businesses since they are the driving force of any economy.

Integration of climate change measures is a global priority, therefore, the ultimate goal of Energy Desk is to reduce the greenhouse gas (GHS) emissions by developing and promoting a market environment that will stimulate investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency initiatives in industry.
